Lane's Creative Director Joff Casciani Explores California And The Pacific Northwest
Located in a northern suburb of Seattle, Shawn Mead and her partner Lauren Feldman had the smart idea of combining coffee shop and cafe with a natural wine shop. Vif offers coffee and snacks during the day and wine at night seems obvious but is such a rare combination.
The success of the Vif operation is quality control and their specialism in ‘natural wines’. Natural wines are wines that have nothing artificial (most wines, including good ones, have added sulphites and yeasts). Unlike many commercial winemakers, natural wine producers look to produce wine that is a direct reflection of the terroir, the variable characteristics of the grape vintages that reflect the weather and conditions of the season. Rather than aiming to produce a style of wine that fits the ‘ideal’, natural wine makers embrace natural variation.
As well as a carefully chosen selection of world wines, the shop offers a speciality coffee (from the Olympia Roasting Company) and sourdough bread that also reflects the owners' values.
The location of Vif is particularly charming as their building appears to be a cute 1960’s diner or gas station building. Whilst the diner style is not much in evidence, to the English eye it very much has traces of American classic cafe architecture.
If you’re in Seattle and want a great bottle of wine that is good for you, show Vif some love!
